If nothing else, Juliet's sister, Rosalind, has given me the word "shitmuffins," and that has to count for something. The actors deliver good performances, but they could only work with what they were given, which isn't great. My genuine laughs were rare enough that each one came as a surprise, not a good sign for a story about a zombie-slaying cheerleader. Unfortunately, while the dick joke-infused writing really worked for Shadows, the Clueless-style camp in Lollipop Chainsaw fails more often than it succeeds. Like Shadows of the Damned – and most of Grasshopper's games, really – Lollipop Chainsaw takes a puerile approach to dialogue and presentation. Where Garcia had a talking skull-on-a-stick for a sidekick, Juliet has the dismembered, talking head of her boyfriend, Nick. Where Garcia (Fucking) Hotspur preferred guns, Juliet throws down with her pom poms and a massive chainsaw. Lollipop Chainsaw bears more than a few similarities to Grasshopper's 2011 shooter, Shadows of the Damned. Accept the fact that an 18-year-old cheerleader with a heart-decorated chainsaw is the only thing that can stand against an impending zombie apocalypse. Don't worry about background info – just accept it. In fact, she comes from an entire family of zombie hunters, including her father and her younger and older sisters. Normally, that would be the case for Lollipop Chainsaw, which neither truly excels or completely fails in any particular area.Īs I said, that would be the case – if only developer Grasshopper Manufacture hadn't already delivered excellent examples in the character action genre, giving us the perfect lens with which to suss out Lollipop Chainsaw's faults.%Gallery-149593% Lollipop Chainsaw stars Juliet Starling, a high school cheerleader who spends her downtime hunting zombies. While it's as effortless to dole out shining praise as it is to spew acrid condemnation, elucidating the merits of something that is neither great nor awful is considerably more difficult. Very modest.Īuto-aim is also a pain in levels with a lot of red drums about it'll lock on zombies, not the barrels which you might want to hit.Reviews of mediocre games are generally the hardest to write. Unlock the Mom outfit that'll keep the missus happy. That and the aim seems to 'stick' every so often, so you can't track quickly after taking one out. It is odd which bits get difficult on Very hard I'm at the bit where you're shooting charging bombers from above, and that bit of extra speed the zombies have at this level is making it a pain. Floored can be stunned, knocked down or legless and crawling. Oh, yeah, the basic jump/stab down move also homes in if there's a floored zombie - B and A on the 360, then hammer on A to finish the zombie - so you don't have to be above a floored zombie to kill 'em in one move. Very noticeable on some of the more mobile bosses. Your Pom-Pom attacks also home in, but yeah, the multiple downward stab combo is strongly homing - get level 3 homing training shoes and you chase the bad guys around in mid-air. Zed is way more foulmouthed in Very Hard, too! Nick tickets are much more important, for that reason - the Nick Shake is great for recharging health when you're in a pinch you really need that chance of avoiding a Continue that a spare ticket gives you when your health finally runs out Nick Spin clears space in a swathe of zombies, and so on.Ĭlearly the way it's meant to be played. With only one lollipop slot you don't have much room for error. Problem is that the zombies move so much more quickly they often get in a combo-breaking hit if you let one slip in behind you. The mega pom-pom/Chainsaw combo (XXXXYY) is awesome when lined up properly, giving a three zombie sparkle most times, without having to soften them up first. The grapple takedown move can floor a bunch of zombies at once, giving some breathing room (or lining up the low spin AXX combo). I find myself using Juliet's butt bounce move to separate them out and take them down. Looks like I'm the only one still playing this, but yeah, I went straight back through once on Hard and then started a Very Hard run much more tactical, especially when you get two or three specials like Quarterback or fireman zombies, or the sprightly old lady with the shopping cart and her strangely athletic hubby. I'm also certain I'm meeting strong zombies who weren't in the normal playthrough as well. I got my ass handed to me in the fucking Prologue Crowd control seems to be a lot more important in this mode as well. It looks like the Very Hard mode is going to show this off the best.
